These days, my sewing is grinding to a halt. I don't have a dedicated sewing space, so I can't leave everything out and grab 30 minute chunks to work on a project. So instead, I am knitting. Even a novice knitter like me can make lovely little luxuries worth having.

Hey look! I cut my hair! I am going to let all the fried-up, dyed-up stuff grow out and see how I feel about grey.
Case in point, the
Catherine Cowl, by
Blue Sky Alpacas. This took me forever to knit. The needles were just 2.75mm! It's a simple basket weave knitted in the round. Nothing difficult about it in the least. It's time consuming, though.
But, I could carry it around in my purse and work on it whenever, wherever. Dentist, Ballet lessons, Swimming lessons, etc.

Here is how it looks on its own.
My only problem was Casting Off without making the edge too tight. I did it the usual way and found I couldn't get it over my head! Then I went online, and found methods for socks that were more stretchy. Still couldn't get it over my head! Do I have a big head, or what? Finally, I did it my own way with a tapestry needle. It doesn't look as good as I would like, but it is a small detail.

The nicer casting on.
I have to say that a basket weave is simple and effective.

I bought the materials for this at the Knitting and Stitching Show at Alexandra Palace a few months back. There was a sweet small business,
Mrs Moon selling luxury yarns. This baby alpaca yarn they were selling was far softer than any cashmere which I felt that day.
I have to admit that I am sorely tempted by their naturally metallic baby alpaca / raw silk blend. It could make a luxurious, on trend scarf for this winter.
Knitting is such a labour intensive activity that using top rate materials makes perfect sense to me. Especially if you value your own time!
Your hair looks great short! The cowl is lovely as well. I haven't been knitting much lately, but I remember knitting a scarf with alpaca yarn that my mom gave me and just loving it. It's soft and warm with zero itchy-ness - definitely worth the money.
ReplyDeleteI like your new haircut. :-) Every time I think about cutting mine short, I'm reminded that then I actually have to do something with it every day as opposed to just brushing it or pulling it back in a ponytail. And I'm simply too lazy for that nonsense. ;-)
ReplyDeleteCute cowl, I love that color on you. And it could just be my absolutely-no-knitting-experience eyes, but I can't tell much difference between the casting on and the casting off, so I wouldn't worry about it. :-)
Love your new 'do, Karin. You look happy and beautiful! And the colour of your new cowl looks wonderful on you. That's the beauty of a portable skill: no permanent space required.
ReplyDeleteLOVE your new haircut!! It really suits you! I got a new cut style too, it's nice every now and then to just shake it up!
ReplyDeleteSoft cowls, oh sooo nice. I just started knitting one too, in alpaca. It's so lovely and soft, and they're just the quick sort of thing to knit that you don't get bored!
I love your hair! Knitting sounds like such a great project, it would be perfect for my life in "bits and pieces", too. Someday... The cowl is very pretty, great color, great pattern.
ReplyDeleteCute 'do, Karin!!
ReplyDeleteGreat cowl! I agree about using nice yarns - knitting is so laborious that you might as well use yarn you are thrilled with.
First up - we've missed you, and secondly - new hair and losing weight? Looking very good indeed!
ReplyDeleteI too sit sometimes and knit but I use the biggest needles possible with the thickest yarn I can find. Well done on your cowl scarf.
This is gorgeous. The prefect colour for you! I love the new hairstyle as well.
ReplyDeleteLove your hairdo! Your beautiful face just sparkles with no competition from the your hair, gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful cowl, and this colour is lovely against your colouring! Your new hairstyle is very edgy and chic :)
ReplyDeleteOoooo pretty! I love to knit and always find myself looking for time to both knit AND sew!
ReplyDeletethat cowl is lovely and I like the color better than the naturals for something close to the face. Your haircut is FAB!
ReplyDeleteI know the post is about the cowl, but I had to comment your new haircut as well! I wish I had the guts to go short like that, it looks great on you.
ReplyDeleteI really need to learn how to knit.
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow curly haired I ask you: isn´t it liberating when you cut your hair short? It´s funny how the non-curlys think ours is a low-maintenance style, when it´s just the opposite.
You look fantastic!
Your cowl is gorgeous and looks so cosy. It looks like a complicated pattern to (non-knitter) me! The colour is divine and really suits you.
ReplyDeleteI love the haircut! I am so jealous of the naturally curlies. It is a really great shape for your face. The cowl is cute too. `-)
ReplyDeleteOh wow... I have the utmost in respect for people who can do things like this... that stitch is so tiny and the texture is just beautiful. I'm not half surprised you were tempted by those skeins - they look delicious side by side like that.
ReplyDeleteAnd is that a new do? I like it! Lovely smile too :)
Love the haircut.
ReplyDeleteXX
Your new hairstyle looks fantastic on you! The neck warmer is very pretty and is such a lovely color.
ReplyDeleteKarin, I really like your new cowl. It was worth the effort.
