New Casual Skirt: Burda Mag 5/2012-118

Burda 5/2012-118
I decided that a good transitional piece would be a kakhi skirt.  I had a large scrap of cotton twill with just a touch of spandex floating around my dining room.  My dear, sainted husband is good enough to suggest that we need more storage furniture, rather than we need a major clear out.  So, this recent Burda pattern seemed like just the thing.  I had enough fabric for it, the right kind of fabric, and it appeared to have a yoke, which I am learning is very helpful for fitting wide hips and a small waist.

I made the longer version and omitted the welt pockets in the back.  With side pockets, I am good,  no need to fuss around with unnecessary welts on something done mostly to whittle down a growing stash of unlikely fabrics that threaten to engulf my family.

It was an easy sew, but I didn't get the sizing right.  I made the waist a little too tight.  Usually the opposite is my problem.  I also did not allow enough room in the back.  It's the kind of thing where I can almost wear it.  It nearly fits.

I am swimming four times a week now.  So maybe this will fit in a month.  On the other hand I read that people gain an average of 5 lbs when they start swimming, so I won't hold my breath.

Next up for me is a few long sleeved tshirts.  I'll try and knock out more than one before I bother posting.

  1. I hate it when things "almost fit"!! :-( However, like you said, maybe it'll be perfect on you in a month...And in two months, maybe it'll need a new home because it's too big. :-)

  2. What a lovely skirt! Perhaps it will grow if you hang it in the closet? Too much work to fiddle with it and make it fit? It really would be a shame if you never got to wear this skirt!

  3. Rats! My fingers are crossed that the swimming will magically make the skirt to fit. I noticed with my half marathon training that even though I did not lose a pound, I lost inches. So, fingers crossed that you have a similar experience.

  5. This is another one of those patterns I ignored until I saw it on a real person. It's really cute and a really versatile colour. You may gain 5lbs of muscle, but you will whittle away your waist and hips, at least that has been my experience.

  6. Very cute skirt. I bet that the swimming will firm up your core and the waist will fit perfectly.

  7. I really like the design lines of this skirt and the shape looks really good on you. Your fly came out perfectly. I have a feeling you will be very happy with the results of a dedicated workout like swimming! You go girl!

  8. What a gorgeous skirt! Terrific colour and the style is really lovely; flattering and easy to wear. Swimming 4 times a week? Bravo! I am sure this will make you feel just fantastic!

  9. I love how this skirt looks on you, and I would have never given it a second look in the magazine! Hopefully it will fit after some more swimming! I'm not a fan of welt pockets either, but came across an Ottobre magazine that did them differently, and it seemed easier. I'll give you more info about it once I dig out the issue.

  10. The skirt is great, I hope you'll be able to wear it! I've been swimming as well (just once or twice a week). Along with the ballet and lots of walks I'm moving much more. My body hasn't changed much, but the difference in how I feel is amazing which is worth even more imo. Keep it up :-) !

  11. I completely overlooked this pattern. It's great! I love khaki anything, and this skirt is perfect, even if you think it's big snug. I like things to fit snugly around the waist - it's just more comfy that way! And 4 times a week? Doing something like exercising? Good on you, Karin!

  12. what a lovely silhouettte this skirt has - modern and waist nipping - very flattering and I hope that the waist stretches out enough to ensure greater comfort.

  13. If you make the pattern again do remember that a wider waistband has to fit at the most narrow part of your waist AND several cms above and below where you are wider. I still have a beautiful dress where I made the same mistake: I haven't given up hope yet of a major weight loss miracle through most of my middle region!
A nice design to use up that fabric.

  14. I love that your husband says you need more storage space - bless!

I hope swimming makes your skirt feel better on, because it's a great style on you and looks like it would be a terrific wardrobe builder...

  15. The skirt looks so good on you. Waist fitting is so annoying. I just made my daughter a pleated skirt with about 8 fittings - perfect a fortnight ago and now too big. She has been swimming several x a week and no 5lb landed on her, so maybe....
