Vogue 8791

I could only find one pattern review for Vogue 8791 on Pattern Review, and it wasn't very positive.  I already had the pattern and the medium weight white linen, so I pressed ahead.  I had wanted to make the short sleeved version, but as usual, I hadn't bought quite enough fabric.  As it was, I had to patch the bias binding together for the arm holes and cut one facing piece on the weft rather than the warp.  Yes, I am cheap.

Still after initial, low expectations, I am pretty happy with it.  I sewed a 12 on top and a 16 on bottom. It should really be an 18 on me on bottom, but Vogue doesn't put enough sizes on a single pattern for me to ever get what I need.  It's very annoying.  I thought there would be enough wearing ease for me to get away with it.  There is not.  The front slit at the hips pulls a little when I am wearing it.  I cranked the hips in on the dress form so I could get the tunic on it!  The fuzzy surface of the dress form "grabs" the fabric and nothing slides.

Of course, I hope to reverse my recent weight gain, so if not this summer, then maybe the next, sigh.
Slightly bigger picture
I used a light pink marking pen on this.  The little drops of water that are suppose to make the marks disappear are not working!  When I ironed over the marks, they turned browny-orange.  Uh, oh.  I hope that a wash in biological washing powder will sort all this out.  I used the same pen, when making a white cotton top with no problems.  Strange.

My plan has been to get on with trying to make some desperately needed pants.  I don't want to.  I'd rather make a dirndl-skirted, summer sun-dress out of the cotton eyelet  that has been sitting in my stash for three years now.  Not really what I need, but likely to be far more flattering and much easier to fit and sew for me.

  2. I love the look and shape of this- yours especially- it looks so crisp. What does that front do when you sit?

    1. It spreads a little at the front overlap when I sit down, but it looks fine. I've been running around doing errands in it, and it doesn't look crumpled or anything.

  6. This is cute! I hope you can get the spots out of it, marker pens are very weird sometimes--I've got a couple of things that the marker hasn't come out of either.

  7. I think it looks great!

I had a similar (non-)disappearing ink thing happen to me once. I ended up using a Tide Stick on it (not sure if you have those - it's an instant stain remover pen) and it worked like a charm.

I have the same problem with Vogue - my top size ends up in one envelope and my bottom size in another. Sigh!

  8. First, that looks great in white linen. You have a lovely top there.

And that was me who wrote the not so positive review. I didn't mean to lower expectations with my review. I hoped to share my trials as something to watch out for, even though I love the pattern and I still do think it is a great looking tunic, it didn't work for me. I should have done the same as you did, made the lower portion a larger size than the bodice top. I did however finish it for my sister-in-law who is about 10 years younger and much thinner than I am and it looks great on her. It is just one top that I wish I made a muslin for before I cut it out in the silk fabric. I did give the pattern away, I hope the give-away winner makes a top as lovely as yours.

    1. Oh Graca, I didn't mean to make you feel singled out or bad about your review! I find the reviews on Pattern Review very helpful, particularly the negative ones. They are the ones where people tend to go into the most detail and note differences from what you would expect.
The fact that there was only one pattern review was as worrying as anything else. I liked a top that few other people thought was worth making! I kind of questioned my own taste. But, I wore the top yesterday and felt pretty good in it.

    2. Oh good. It didn't work for me, but I did I didn't want to prevent anyone from trying it. Yours looks lovely and beautifully crisp in the white linen. I hope you get lots of wear from it. Cheers.

  9. I like this a lot! This pattern suffers from bad pattern illustration. Who would have known that the resulting top could be so sleek and chic?

As for getting the marking pen stains out, maybe oxi-clean bleach will work? It's non-toxic, and has worked minor miracles for me.

  11. Your top looks so stylish, crisp and smart.
Personally I think the word for finangling fabric so you have enough even though you have 20cm less than the pattern envelope requires is thrifty, or frugal, but maybe that is because your piecing and cutting on the weft sounds awfully familiar:)

  12. I haven't made anything in linen for myself, but this looks so elegant, and expensive! I love the shape of it, and the sound of that cotton eyelet summer dress ;-)

  13. This top looks very smart and chic; I'll bet it gets a LOT of wear!

I know I feel more motivated to post a review on PatternReview when a pattern had problems for me, so you can maybe assume from only 1 review that other people made the top and it worked pretty well for them? I don't think you need to question your taste!

  14. I really do like this blouse, Karin. It looks really crisp and fresh in the white linen. It looks great, and I'm sure it's a very flattering top on you.

  15. What a crisp and classic summer top! I really like the length of it and the fact that it is sleeveless. Keeping my fingers crossed for you that those marks come out in the wash.

  16. I like the look of the top! If you find that it's opening over the hips, maybe put in side vents? Side vents are totally a design feature. `-)
