Simplicity 2579: Getting some wear out of it!

I sewed Simplicity 2579 out of Italian silk jacquard that I bought at Joel and Sons in London.  I wore it once to my sister's wedding 2 years ago.

Sadly the pictures that show the dress well on my old blog were lost.  Here are two that were taken socially at the wedding.

Formal dresses cost time and money to make and don't get worn much.  My children's school is having a Spring Ball to raise money for the school.  It's really more like a dinner dance.  Most men will be in dinner jackets (tuxedos) but some will wear their best suit.  A few women will be in long dresses, but most go short.  A full on ball gown would be too much.

So I am thinking I could give this dress another outing, if I find the right shoes to make it a little dressier.  I can't cope with really high heels.  My feet just can't take it.  I am hoping to find some shoes that might work with other outfits down the line.  At the moment the only high heels I own are a black silk pair that I have had for 15 years.  So a second pair in red, wouldn't be too extravagant, but rather a welcome addition to the closet.  For this reason, I am leaning away from shoes with cute little details like bows, etc. because I want to the shoes to last a while.

I have found two contenders.  Let me know which you think would be best.

Sabira Shoe
Quite a deep red.

This shoe is more coral than deep red.

Now don't click on the links, look at the prices and faint.  Remember, I am re-using the dress, and intend to buy shoes that I can use again, when something dressy comes up, and I don't want to use the black silk shoes that are still going strong.

Any thoughts or suggestions ladies?  Which would look best with the dress?  Which would I get the most use out of overall?

  1. Hobb's Elle Diagonal Cut Court in Ruby looks more agressive posh to me. they will make any outfit look more stylish.
You look very lovely in the dress! I love it!

  2. I'd go with the lowest heel, next I'd go with the more classic cut (first above). If you're wearing it for years you don't want to get tired of it or feel the style is "over". I'd love a pair of red shoes!

  3. I'd have to agree. The Hobb's shoe really does look chic, and bonus for a lower heel! I would think you'd get more use out of the Hobb's. Love red shoes! And LOVE the dress! You look lovely in it.

  4. I too love the diagonal cut and the heel on that style. But I think the other color is more red. So I'm no help at all!

  5. I vote for the LK Bennett pump. It is beautiful, and its classic lines will always be in style.

  6. I love the classic lines of the first shoe, and the color. FWIW, the prices seem reasonable for a well made shoe.

  7. I like the first one better, but then, I'm pretty anti-pointy-toed-shoe. And I agree with others about spending a bit more on a classic, well-made shoe. If you want something with a heel that would be comfortable (or at least as comfortable as heels can get), I really like Sofft brand shoes (http://www.sofftshoe.com/Search.aspx?phrase=red) and also Born brand shoes, though I didn't see any in a proper red on their website.

Love the dress BTW, you look so pretty in it. :-)

    1. I do have a pair of Softt shoes! But, I can't buy them here in the UK. They seem to be a U S brand.

  8. Both are great! But I'd go with the first if you want to have it for years - it's a classic.

  9. I like the first pair best too, though I don't think you can go wrong with either. If you aren't buying them online and can try them on, then I would go for the most comfortable (which is not necessarily a priority in dress shoes).

  10. I like the first pair best also.. It's such a classic shoe, but either one would be great.

  11. I prefer the first shoe, perhaps because it looks a more classic style.

  12. I like both pairs - no help - I'm sorry! By the way - did you know that you can buy shoe clip thingies - somewhat like clip-on earring backs for shoes. You can then make bows or flowers or whatever and attach them to your shoes to match a particular outfit. Doesn't damage the shoes, but gives you "options" for dressing up a shoe. Just an idea...

  13. You did a beautiful job on that dress and look so lovely wearing it. I vote for the first pair and think that we all need a pair of red heels in our wardrobe just for the fun of it.

  14. Love your dress, Karin! It's so pretty! I vote for the first pair of red shoes - I think round is more flattering (and easier to walk in) than an elongated pointy toe. I have 2 pairs of pointy-toe shoes, and I am always having to constantly remind myself to pick up my toes a bit higher than I usually would while walking in order to not drag the point to smithereens. And isn't the LK Bennet brand a comfortable shoe? I think the Duchess of Cambridge is always seen wearing a nude pair.

  15. That is SUCH a pretty dress! It's so feminine! I vote for the higher heels

  16. My vote is for the first pair; the second pair is more trendy and I think that square shape at the vamp will look dated pretty quickly.

Born heels are as comfortable as heels can be, as CG Couture noted. I wore 4 inchers to a wedding and didn't die. And believe me, I whine about 1 inch kitten heels. I am very anti-high heels.

Your version of that dress turned out so nice--let's just say I've never even worn mine. The bodice is all kinds of doesn't fit.

  17. Wow! I've just come back here and my comment (written on the 1st day) has disappeared!
So, my best effort to reproduce it:

Have you tried them both on? I think shoes are a very personal decision, and you should try on both pairs and walk about in them, checking out both the front view and side view in a full length mirror, and then you should surely get an idea of which feels best to you on your own feet.
I'm so glad you are getting the chance to wear your beautiful dress again! It is lovely on you!

  18. RE: My blog list - I haven't updated the list on my sidebar in ages, since I discovered and learned how to use the dashboard.
I started to remove that list but left it there because my mother and one of my friends use it. The dashboard is great because it contains only recent posts from people on your list and you don't have to check everyone on the list. The only problem I have with dashboard is that it limits me to 300 subscriptions. Not that I read 300 daily because all 300 don't post daily. I'll update the sidebar list when I get a little time though.

  19. That dress is so pretty. As for shoes - you should get the most comfortable ones (:
