So, what was I thinking when I bought all that leather?

Well, I was sort of thinking this:
Yves Saint Laurent
Yves Saint Laurent from Net-a-Porter
Or maybe this:
Raquel Allegra
Raquel Allegra, Net-a-Porter
Or, even this:
3.1 Phillip Lim

I like the leather t-shirts better than the leather button down shirts that are out right now.  It's a good thing too because the t-shirts are bound to be much easier to sew.  They look sort of Modern and Minimalist as opposed to Western.

In order to make my shirt there are a few patterns I am considering.  First there is Burda's take on the leather shirt trend from October 2010:

The line drawing:

I am also thinking of using Butterick's 3030, labelled "fast and easy."
B3030
B3030
This one gives lots of options for getting the most efficient cuts out of my leather and would also assist in mixing materials like Lindsay T did to such good effect.  It also looks like I could avoid easing in sleeves altogether.  Very appealing when sewing with something expensive, where you only get one chance at it.

Obviously, even a lazy girl like myself is going to have to make a few muslins and decide.

  1. I wonder if there's a way to morph the two together? Because I love the raglan sleeves of the Butterick pattern, but I'm also smitten with the cool gathers on the Burda. I have absolutely no idea how to mix the two, so unfortunately, I'm of no help whatsoever. Sorry!

I can't wait to see what you ultimately decide though, because I'm very interested in seeing how those leathers sew up.

  2. Decision. Decisions. Whichever (is that a word?) pattern you choose, I'm sure that the end result will be fabulous. A leather t-shirt has GOT to look fabulous.

  3. A leather Tshirt sounds marvellous!! Can't wait to see what you come up with... and I'm so jealous that you went to NY and got to go shopping in the garment district.
Also your new nephew is adorable :)

  4. Probably best to throw a dart to decide - just go for it - it will be fab - I'm assuming it will be lined - and when I say dart I don't mean a sewing dart!

  5. I like both the pattern possibilities you have chosen and think they will look amazing in the leather you have purchased. The Burda style looks very cool and as it is designed for leather you should be able to assume that the sleeves have been drafted without a lot of ease and should ease in OK (but I might be wrong about that!). If you want to go the fabric mixing route then the Butterick one would be perfect and as it looks easier than the Burda one it might be safest for your precious leather. I think that a muslin or two is the way to go!

  6. A leather short! Sounds very cutting edge. Can't wait to see your version.

  7. Wow! You are a brave sewist! I don't think sewing leather will be something that I would attempt. I love to wear leather, but sewing it up? Maybe after a few stiff drinks. But that said, I love the colour of your leather and the Burda pick. And mixing two fabrics like LindsayT did sounds like it would take some of the fitting hassle out of a rather daunting garment.
