| More pictures taken in the mirror, sorry guys, I know they are poor. |

| This one might be a little better despite the smudgy rainbow. |
So here we have my Butterick 3030 muslin. It's between this and the Burda 10-2010-119. Unfortunately, I did not have any more poly/cotton twill left for this muslin, so I used some cheap denim. The denim is about the same weight as the leather, but not the same drape. It has a much stiffer hand.
Shaving a bit off the sleeve head of the burda version solves the easing problem. So now it is down to which is better style wise. I think either one will be relatively easy to sew. I usually stay away from raglan sleeves because my shoulders are narrow relative to my hips, and I find that raglan sleeves de-emphasise them. But I think this pattern is OK. Maybe due to the dart on top of the ragland sleeve which emphasises the shoulder curve.
Just to remind you for the two styles, I'll repost the pattern drawings.

I'm about to order some thread and some leather glue so I can finally get going on this one. I'd certainly welcome and thoughts, opinions, advice, etc before I start cutting!
What I would do is frankenpattern the neckline of the Burda onto the body/sleeves of the Butterick. But then I do have a tendency to make work for myself!
ReplyDeleteI like the raglan sleeve pattern best, but do like Lucy's idea of morphing the Burda design with the raglan design also.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing your completed top. What colour skins are you using?
I like the look of leather and have kept a leather pair of trousers and skirt that i used to wear 20+ years ago. Maybe, one day i'll be able to wear them again!
I'm still for a morph of the two because I love the details of the Burda neckline, but I think you'll have better mobility in this one because of the raglan sleeves. Either way, I can't wait to see how it turns out for you.
ReplyDeleteOh wow. I'm really torn. I like the Burda neckline, but the raglan sleeves. If I had to choose one, I might go with the butterick. Either way, I think your top will be fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThe hard part is knowing the hand of the leather ... I think I prefer the Butterick, because I'm not sure how those little neckline gathers will work in your leather. I think the simplicity of the Butterick will show off the leather nicely.
ReplyDeletePersonally I think this one is a winner, but then I have a preference for simple lines in a garment, and particularly a leather one. I would worry about the gathers too...
ReplyDeleteBut I think either one would look completely fabulous! Can't wait to see the finished top!
I don't know anything about sewing leather, but I wonder if gathering leather might be a bit unpredictable - also I think I prefer this plainer style, I think it would look really chic and expensive in leather.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comments on my nearly dress - my blog also has a low-readership, but I'd just recently been thinking about The Sewing Blog Community... And re kids' pictures, since the pictures can crop up in image searches I think you probably have to be cautious regardless of whether you're a big or small blogger.
Thanks Karen! I went and bought this top pattern yesterday because of yours.
ReplyDeleteWell, here's my helpful comment on the leather top issue. Make both! You can always excuse another leather purchase due to the season, and you are entitled to a present of some sort, are you not? :) Seriously, though, I prefer the Burda. I know it's probably a bit harder to fit with the sleeve ease, working with gathers, and all that - for your first leather project, but if you make the back in a stretch fabric, not leather, perhaps you'd have enough leather to get both tops into your wardrobe?
